UN PROBE EXPECTED TO ROCK LEBANON, SYRIA
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- A United Nations investigation into the assassinationof former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri could destabilize the regimes in Lebanonand Syria. Western diplomatic sources said a UN investigation headed by German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis has identified political and military leaders as suspects in the Hariri assassination. The report, relayed on Thursday to UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, determined that leading Syrian and Lebanese intelligence officers lied to UN investigators and could be subject to prosecution.
