Jordan Cracks Down On Islamic Support Network
AMMAN [MENL] -- Jordan has launched a crackdown on an Islamic network meant
to recruit and finance attacks against Western tourism.
Jordanian security sources said troops have been raiding the Palestinian
refugee camp of Baqaa over the last week. The sources said the raids were
meant to dismantle a suspected Islamic network that recruited unemployed
youngsters and paid them to attack tourist sites around Amman.
"We know there is an infrastructure that has indoctrinated and recruited
young people," a security source said. "What we're trying to find out is the
extent of this campaign."
So far, authorities have arrested nine Palestinians in Baqaa, located
about 15 kilometers northwest of Amman. The detainees have been accused of
being part of Al Qaida-inspired network that plotted to attack tourist and
other targets in the Hashemite kingdom.
