ISLAMIC TENSIONS RISE WITHIN EGYPT'S MILITARY

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Tensions are said to be rising between the regime ofEgyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Islamic elements in the military. Western diplomatic sources said the Mubarak regime has becomeincreasingly alarmed by the rising influence of Islamic fundamentalism inall parts of the military. They said Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi hasurged Mubarak to crack down on these elements and adopt the Turkish militarymodel. Turkey regularly expels suspected Islamist officers and soldiers fromthe military.
