Turkey Braces For PKK Offensive
ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey has been bracing for the prospect of a Kurdish
insurgency offensive in major cities.
Turkish officials said the Kurdish Workers Party has been increasing
operations and smuggling weapons and explosives from Iraq to Turkey. They
said PKK squads from Iraq's Kandil mountains were delivering hundreds of
kilograms of plastic explosives and chemicals to insurgency safe houses in
Turkey.
"We see an intensified effort that could signal plans for a series of
major attacks during the summer," an official said.
Officials said the PKK was also sending operatives from northern Iraq
through the mountains along the Turkish border. On Monday, at least two PKK
operatives were killed in a clash in the Tunceli province.
