GREECE ENCOURAGES DEFENSE MERGERS

ATHENS [MENL] -- The government has launched a policy of encouraging Greekdefense contractors to merge in an effort to avoid duplication in productionas well as research and development. Officials and defense executives said the effort has begun with thestate-owned companies. Two of the nation's four state-owned companies havestarted to merge in a process that could take up to 2004.
