TURKEY PROBES BRIBERY IN ARMS PROCUREMENT

ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey's government and military are investigatingallegations of bribery and corruption in weapons tenders. Already, a senior officer has been arrested on suspicion of providinginsider information to arms contractors that competed for military projectsin Turkey. Turkish sources said additional suspects are expected to bedetained. The arrest of Col. Muhtar Koray -- responsible for tender proposals forweapons -- has capped quiet efforts to root out corruption in the DefenseMinistry and the military. The effort to eliminate bribery and corruption inarms tenders began nearly three years ago when military officers werelargely banned from access to weapons contractors.
