"In light of these security concerns, Americans are urged to maintain a
high level of vigilance, to be aware of their surroundings, and to take
appropriate steps to increase their security awareness," the report said.
"It is especially important for travelers to be unpredictable -- vary your
time and route and maintain a low profile. Moreover, Americans are urged to
avoid contact with any suspicious or unfamiliar objects and to immediately
report the presence of such objects to the authorities."
    The State Department, reporting a low crime rate in the Hashemite
kingdom, urged Americans in Jordan to avoid demonstrations or crowds,
particularly during times of increased tension. The department cited the
potential violence in demonstrations that take place near mosques after
Friday prayers.
    "Visitors are also recommended to keep a low profile and not establish
predictable patterns of movement," the report said. "Facilities where
Americans or foreigners are likely to congregate, such as hotels,
nightspots, restaurants, and places of worship should be considered
potential targets."
