In April, Hamas stormed the Israeli border terminal at Keren Shalom. The
Hamas operation, which included the detonation of a car bomb, injured 13
Israeli soldiers.
In his briefing, Yadlin said Hamas first sought to again destroy the
12-kilometer border wall between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. But
amid warnings and Egyptian reinforcements, he said, Hamas has directed its
focus toward Israel.
"It's an operational opportunity for them to hurt both soldiers and
civilians," Yadlin said. "They'll target everything they can along the
Hubers Route [Israel-Gaza border], including digging tunnels, laying
explosives and carrying out shooting attacks."
"The IDF has intelligence indicating terrorists might try to mimic the
Passover attack, including the possible abductions of soldiers," Yadlin
said.
Officials said Hamas has been trained by Hizbullah in night operations,
sabotage, explosives and abductions along the Israeli border. They said
Hamas has significantly improved its military capabilities over the last six
months.
The Hamas regime has been taken over by military commanders in the Gaza
Strip, Yadlin said. He cited such commanders as Ahmed Jaabari, who help
organize a Palestinian military, as well as Executive Force founder Yusef
Zahar.
"The [political] leadership is weak," Yadlin said.
