The satellite, titled DubaiSat-1, would be overseen by the UAE Defense
Ministry. Officials said the DubaiSat-1 would be launched in late 2008 by a
foreign space launch vehicle.
UAE military Brig. Gen. Khalifa Mohammad Al Rumaithi said DubaiSat-1 has
advanced significantly over the last year. Al Rumaithi said the
remote-sensing satellite would have civil and military uses.
At a defense intelligence conference in Dubai on April 28, speakers
referred to DubaiSat-1. They said the satellite would be available to GCC
states for a range of applications, including infrastructure development,
mapping and crisis management.
