WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States plans to provide Egypt with a system
to help its air force plan combat flight operations.The Pentagon has awarded a $9 million contract to Orbital Sciences
Corp., based in Germantown, Md., for the supply of an integrated mission
support system for the air force. The computer system allows for both
mission planning as well as training by Egyptian pilots.The award is part of a U.S. project to upgrade the Egyptian air force.
The Pentagon is supplying Cairo with computer hardware and software,
database preparation system, workstation integration and support equipment
to assist Egyptian Air Force crews in conducting automated pre-mission
planning, exercises and combat flight operations.The project is currently in its second phase. Under this phase. Orbital
will install an additional 25 systems and integrate networking and Arabic
language capabilities. The contract also includes technical assistance,
initial spares and contractor depot support.Officials said Egypt will pay for the mission support system from the
annual military aid by Washington to Cairo. The administration has allocated
$1.3 billion in military aid to Egypt for fiscal 2002.
