IRAN MIFFED BY RARE EU CRITICISM

NICOSIA [MENL] -- Iran has been angered by a European Union resolution that questions whether President Mohammed Khatami has achieved any liberal reforms in his country.

European parliamentarians passed a resolution last week that criticized Iran's human rights record. The deputies said Khatami has failed to improve Iran's human rights record in more than four years in office.

The resolution said Iran's human rights record has deteriorated since Khatami's reelection in June.

"There have been no significant signs of reform and in fact the number of executions has drastically increased," the resolution said.

The European Parliament resolution cited Iran's refusal to maintain an independent judiciary and media. "There have been repeated attacks on freedom of assembly, of expression and of conscience," the resolution said. "Severe restrictions are imposed on women and minority rights are not fully respected."
