IRAN SEEKS ADDITIONAL ARMS DEALS WITH RUSSIA

MOSCOW [MENL] -- Iran and Russia have moved into a new stage of negotiations for the supply of weapons from Moscow.

Russian industry sources said the two countries have launched discussions of the Iranian purchase of surface-to-air and sea-to-sea missiles. The discussions come in wake of an agreement for Teheran's purchase of upgraded transport helicopters from Russia.

Iran, the sources said, has focused on a range of Russian air defense systems. These include the strategic S-300 and the short-range Tor-M-1. Other systems include the shoulder-fired Igla as well as sea-to-sea missiles.

The two countries are exploring the feasibility of these sales as well as financial terms. The proposed package is estimated at $300 million.
