RUSSIA PREPARES FOR NEW MIDEAST ARMS DEALS

MOSCOW [MENL] -- Russia is preparing for the prospect that it will conclude major weapons deals with Middle East clients.

Russian industry defense sources said the clients include Algeria and Iran. The sources said Moscow is in the advanced stages of negotiations with both countries for the transfer of systems and technology.

Last week, Russia facilitated regulations regarding weapons exports. The new measures are meant to lead to a greater number of defense companies that can sell their systems abroad as well as a more rapid process to obtain export licenses.

Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the establishment of a panel that would oversee weapons exports. The president also approved an increase in the number of defense exporters.

"Foreign customers have been showing increasing interest in Russian weapons and the military hardware," Putin aide Sergei Prikhodko told the Moscow-based Itar-Tass news agency. "Amid these conditions, questions of service and repair of exported military products have been gaining special importance."
