MOSCOW [MENL] -- Russia is preparing for the prospect that it will conclude
major weapons deals with Middle East clients.Russian industry defense sources said the clients include Algeria and
Iran. The sources said Moscow is in the advanced stages of negotiations with
both countries for the transfer of systems and technology.Last week, Russia facilitated regulations regarding weapons exports. The
new measures are meant to lead to a greater number of defense companies that
can sell their systems abroad as well as a more rapid process to obtain
export licenses.Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the establishment of a panel
that would oversee weapons exports. The president also approved an increase
in the number of defense exporters."Foreign customers have been showing increasing interest in Russian
weapons and the military hardware," Putin aide Sergei Prikhodko told the
Moscow-based Itar-Tass news agency. "Amid these conditions, questions of
service and repair of exported military products have been gaining special
importance."
