U.S. PROJECT SEEKS TO INTERCEPT CRUISE MISSILES

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States is proceeding with a project meant to intercept cruise missiles.

The Pentagon program focuses on the development of a subsonic miniature interceptor that can track and destroy cruise missiles. Iran has procured cruise missiles and several other Middle East states are considering programs to develop such low-flying projectiles.

So far, a prototype interceptor has been launched in test flights. The contractor is Northrop Grumman, which on Dec. 11 conducted a test of the Miniature Air Launch Interceptor at the Naval Air Weapons Division, China Lake in California. The interceptor is powered by the Hamilton Sundstrand TJ-50 engine.

The latest test included the deployment of the AIMS-II computer system, communications data link for off-board guidance, as well as a built-in inertial measurement unit. The program is being funded and managed under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Tactical Technology Office.
