U.S. TO DELIVER M1A1 TANK ENGINES TO EGYPT

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States plans to send Egypt engines for its M1A1 tank.

The Pentagon has awarded a $14.3 million contract to Honeywell International, based in Tempe, Ariz. for the engines. A Pentagon statement said Honeywell will remanufacture 100 AGT 1500 Abrams tank engines for Egypt's military.

Officials said the remanufacture involves engines that were produced in 1994 and will now undergo engineering changes. This includes the provision of a digital electronic control unit which monitors engine performance

Egypt has a fleet of more than 550 M1A1 tanks. Cairo has also ordered another 100 Abrams tanks for assembly in Egypt.

Officials said the contract includes an option for Egypt to purchase an additional 100 engines. The project is meant for completion in 2005. The contract will be carried out in the United States.
