LONDON [MENL] -- The United Arab Emirates is reviewing procurement of South
Africa's new 155 mm G6 self-propelled artillery system. The improved G6 has been tested by South Africa's Denel over the last
few months. The system has been offered to UAE, Kuwait and other Gulf
Cooperation Council states.Industry sources said Denel is producing the G6 for the UAE. An earlier
G6 155 mm model 45 caliber system, has already been exported to Oman and the
UAE. Abu Dhabi ordered 78 units of the artillery system.Executives said the improved G6 artillery system has a range of 53.6
kilometers. They said this makes the G6 the first fully-qualified and
in-service gun and ammunition system exceeding the range of 40 kilometers. The extended range of the G6, originally developed for the South African
military, uses the new Velocity enhanced Long range Artillery Projectile
which combines base bleed and rocket motor technology and the new M64
bi-modular charge system. In trials in South Africa, probable errors in
ranges were constantly better than 0.38 percent.South Africa is developing an even longer range 155 mm artillery shell
called the PRO-RAM. The shell is meant to reach a range of 70 kilometers.
