ABU DHABI [MENL] -- The United Arab Emirates is ready to select a contractor
for a $50 million project to remove 130,000 land mines from southern
Lebanon.Officials said the selection of a contractor is expected to be announced
shortly. They said that 10 companies have been placed on a list of
finalists out of 35 firms that submitted bids.In all, officials said, the UAE military, responsible for the project,
will choose up to four companies to remove and destroy the mines in Lebanon.
The project is being supported and organized by the United Nations.Maj. Gen. Mohammed Hilal Al Ka'abi said selection of the winners will be
based on capabilities and experience. Al Ka'abi said the project, termed
Operation Emirates Solidarity, will be conducted in two stages.
