IRAQ CAN WEAPONIZE MISSILES

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has determined that Iraq can weaponize its missiles with chemical warheads.

U.S. officials said Iraq has prepared a stockpile of chemical weapons and is working on biological weapons. They said the regime of President Saddam Hussein appears to be more advanced in developing chemical warheads and bombs.

"I certainly believe that they have a stockpile of chemical weapons weaponized, ready to go, if they should need them," Assistant Secretary of State Carl Ford said.

Ford, responsible for intelligence and research at the State Department, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Iraq has failed to account for many chemical weapons possessed during the 1991 Gulf war. He said Iraq has both the infrastructure and expertise to develop weapons of mass destruction.
