KUWAIT SEEKS RUSSIAN MISSILE PURCHASE

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Kuwait seeks to purchase missiles from Russia.

Gulf defense sources said a Kuwaiti delegation has been in Moscow as well as in an arms exhibition in the Urals examining the latest Russian weapons. These included missiles and military transports.

The sources said Kuwait appears to be most interested in purchasing the Smerch strategic multiple-rocket launcher. The Smerch, termed the BM-9 A52-2, is a 300 mm rocket with a range of up to 90 kilometers. The Smerch battery contains 12 rockets, with a payload of 100 kilograms each.

Kuwait purchased the first Smerch multiple-rocket launchers in 1995. The sheikdom is said to have 27 batteries.
