ATHENS [MENL] -- Greece reports a successful test of its PAC-2 anti-missile
system.The Hellenic Air Force destroyed a drone meant to simulate a cruise
missile in an interception test on Thursday. Officials said the PAC-2 system
located, tracked and destroyed the sub-sonic target at the NATO missile
firing installation on the island of Crete.For Greece, the interception marked the first live test of its Patriot
air and missile defense system. Greece has purchased four PAC-3 systems in a
$1.1 billion deal. The agreement included the Greek leasing of three
PAC-2 batteries to cover the nation's immediate needs until the PAC-3 is
operational and ready for U.S. export.The Patriot system, manufactured by the U.S. firm Raytheon, tracked the
target drone at an altitude of 5 kilometers and at a range of 30 kilometers.
Officials said the PAC-2 fire control unit was operated by the Gree air
force.
