WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Despite pledges to the United States, China continues
to serve as a leading source of missile-related technology to the Middle
East, a new report says. The report by the U.S.-China Security Review Commission asserts that
China has failed to honor pledges to Washington over the last two years to
end the export of missile and weapons of mass destruction technology to such
countries as Iran, Libya and Syria. The commission, established by Congress
last year, said Beijing's missile exports pose a security threat to the
United States."China fails to control the export of dual-use items that contribute to
the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery
systems," the commission report said. "China is a leading international
source of missile-related technologies. Its proliferation activities with
terrorist-sponsoring and other states, despite commitments to the U.S. to
cease such activities, present serious problems for U.S. national security
interests, particularly in the Middle East and Asia."In closed hearings that preceded the report, the commission heard
testimony from leading U.S. analysts that China's proliferation policy
has been directed by Beijing's Foreign Ministry and meant to increase
China's diplomatic and trade initiatives. The analysts said the Foreign
Ministry had approved the export of missiles and other technology before the
Chinese
military was allowed to purchase them.
