SUDAN, REBELS SIGN CEASEFIRE ACCORD

LONDON [MENL] -- The Sudanese regime and rebel forces have signed a ceasefire accord.

The accord was signed on Saturday at the end of nearly a week of negotiations in Geneva. The agreement calls for a staged ceasefire that would begin in central Sudan and move south. The ceasefire is scheduled to take effect on Tuesday and is to last six months.

The Sudanese government and the Sudanese People's Liberation Army agreed that the fighting would end in the Nuba mountains. The ceasefire would be accompanied by a joint panel to monitor the agreement. International observers would seek to ensure the implementation of the accord.

Up to 15 military personnel would be sent to monitor the ceasefire. On Sunday, the London-based Al Hayat daily reported that the monitors would come from Britain, Norway, Switzerland and the United States.
