WASHINGTON [MENL] -- A House subcommittee has been told that Egypt
recently purchased 24 No-Dong medium-range missiles from North Korea. The assertion was made by a leading foreign policy expert to the House
Armed Services subcommittee late last month. The witness said the purchase
was
made recently and the missiles could be tipped with nonconventional
warheads."Egypt recently purchased 24 No-Dong medium-range missiles, the only
purpose for which I, frankly, can conceive is as a threat to Israel," Frank
Gaffney, president of the Washington-based Center for Security Policy, told
the House subcommittee oversight panel on terrorism. "They could, after all,
be used to deliver chemical, biological or even perhaps small atomic or
nuclear weapons to Israel."Gaffney's assertion on May 23 failed to make a ripple, although
congressional staffers said the testimony had been provided in advance to
the committee. Neither chairman James Saxton nor committee members responded
to the No-Dong report and Gaffney did
not elaborate on Egypt during the rest of the session.
