WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States asserts that Libya and Syria aim to obtain nuclear weapons.

The latest assertion came from U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz. Wolfowitz was speaking on a talk show by a New York radio station.

"We see countries like Libya and Syria also pursuing nuclear and chemical and biological weapons," Wolfowitz said.

The deputy defense secretary's assertion was echoed by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who also expressed concern over Libyan and Syrian nuclear programs. Rumsfeld said Libya and Syria are involved in what he termed an intensive effort to weaponize their missile arsenals with biological and chemical weapons.
