UAE APPEARS PLEASED WITH REGIONAL SYSTEMS

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Defense chiefs in the United Arab Emirates appear pleased with a regional communications and early-warning system established for Gulf Cooperation Council states.

UAE chiefs, in a series of appearances and interviews, said the Hazm Taawun, or Belt of Cooperation project has produced desired results. They said the GCC systems would be improved over the next few years.

The systems were installed and launched in February 2001. Officials said GCC countries are being trained to learn the early-warning and communications systems in stages.

The Cooperation Belt System is another mode of joint coordination and is the first step on the way to the full integration of the armed forces of the GCC states," UAE Chief of Staff Lt. General Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan said. "The system is just one of the several means which would lead to a greater joint GCC works in the future."
