QATAR, TURKEY DISCUSS MILITARY COOPERATION

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Qatar and Turkey are discussing the prospect of military cooperation.

The effort is described as preliminary and could lead to joint exercises and Turkish training. Ankara is also seeking to sell defense systems and weapons to the Gulf Cooperation Council state.

Last month, Qatari Chief of Staff Maj Gen. Hamad Bin Ali Al Attiyah met Col. Mustafa Doundar, non-resident Turkish military attache. The official Qatari news agency reported that the two men were said to have discussed means of enhancing cooperation.

Qatar has launched an effort to expand defense cooperation with both GCC and European states. Doha's chief military supplier is France, which has sold Qatar about 90 percent of its military equipment.
