CHINA MARKETS NEW ROCKET SYSTEM TO MIDEAST

LONDON [MENL] -- China is said to have offered a new multiple-launch rocket system to prospective Middle East clients.

Industry sources said the new A100 multiple-rocket system is being promoted as a cheaper version of Russia's Smerch multiple-launch rocket system. The Smerch has been sold to several Middle East states, including Kuwait.

The A-100 is manufactured by the China National Precision Machinery Import & Export Corp. The firm has presented briefings to several Middle East militaries. The sources identified some of the militaries as Egypt, Kuwait, Libya and Sudan.

The Chinese export effort began over the last few months after Beijing's military introduced the A-100 system into service more than two years ago. The company has touted the A-100 as being nearly identical to the Smerch, which fires 12 300 mm rockets. In contrast, the A-100 has 10 launcher tubes.
