EGYPT PLANS TO REPLACE AGING AIR DEFENSE RADARS

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Egypt plans to replace its aging air defense radars with new systems from the United States.

U.S. officials said Egypt has requested new systems to replace the Trackstar radar. The new systems are meant to support Egypt's Chaparral light surface-to-air missile fire units.

Egypt seeks to purchase the AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar from the United States in a proposed $44 million sale. The Bush administration has approved the Egyptian request.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress that Washington intends to sell 12 AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar systems. The sale would also include 12 AN/VRC-92E Sincgars radio sets, generators and spare parts.
