WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Kuwait intends to obtain systems that will help improve
the F/A-18 fighter-jet.U.S. officials said the Bush administration has approved a program that
would enhance the capabilities of the F/A-18 for Kuwait and other allies.
Kuwait has 40 F/A-18 C and D models procured in 1992 and is considering the
purchase of advanced platforms.The Kuwaiti F/A-18 fleet has not been fully utilized, officials said,
because of a shortage of pilots. The enhancements being proposed would
provide avionics that would help train and debrief pilots of the F/A-18,
manufactured by the Boeing Co.The U.S. Defense Department has awarded a $510.7 million contact to
Boeing's subsidiary, McDonnell Douglas, for a project to study, design,
develop and implement enhancements to F/A-18 embedded avionics. The project
would also develop ground-based F/A-18 mission planning and debriefing.
