KUWAIT TO OBTAIN SYSTEMS TO ENHANCE F/A-18

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Kuwait intends to obtain systems that will help improve the F/A-18 fighter-jet.

U.S. officials said the Bush administration has approved a program that would enhance the capabilities of the F/A-18 for Kuwait and other allies. Kuwait has 40 F/A-18 C and D models procured in 1992 and is considering the purchase of advanced platforms.

The Kuwaiti F/A-18 fleet has not been fully utilized, officials said, because of a shortage of pilots. The enhancements being proposed would provide avionics that would help train and debrief pilots of the F/A-18, manufactured by the Boeing Co.

The U.S. Defense Department has awarded a $510.7 million contact to Boeing's subsidiary, McDonnell Douglas, for a project to study, design, develop and implement enhancements to F/A-18 embedded avionics. The project would also develop ground-based F/A-18 mission planning and debriefing.
