UAE COMPLETES DEAL TO PURCHASE FRENCH NAVAL CRAFT

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- The United Arab Emirates has completed preparations for the purchase of new fast attack naval vessels from France.

After five years of negotiations, the UAE has reached agreement to purchase six missile patrol boats from France's Constructions Mecaniques de Normandie in a deal estimated at $780 million. Gulf defense sources said the contract will be announced over the next two weeks.

The sources said the two sides agreed that five of the six naval vessels would be assembled by the UAE firm Abu Dhabi Ship Building. The Abu Dhabi company would also receive technology for the production of key subsystems.

ADSB has been deemed as the prime contractor in the project, called Al Baynunah. The sources said the first vessel would be built by CMN in Cherbourg, France.
