IRAN DEPLOYS NEW MILITARY SYSTEMS DURING EXERCISE

NICOSIA [MENL] -- Iran reports the deployment of new armored and electronic warfare systems during a recent exercise.

The indigenous systems were displayed during an exercise last month in central Iran meant to improve the military's mobile and rapid response capability. The exercise also aimed to bolster the military's presence along Iran's western border with Iraq and southern border along the Persian Gulf.

Iranian officials said the army displayed the BPR-82 armored personnel carrier during a ground force exercise in Qom. The official Iranian news agency, IRNA, provided few details of the BPR-82. It said the mobile artillery unit was produced by Iran's Ground Force defense industries and is meant to protect and provide firepower support for infantry troops.

The BPR-82 was said to have fired artillery shells toward mock enemy troops. Officials said the firepower from the APC helped slowed the advance of enemy forces.
