KUWAIT PLANS TO ORDER U.S. RADAR

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The Bush administration has approved a $131 million deal to sell a radar surveillance system to Kuwait to monitor its border with Iraq.

U.S. officials said the administration has notified Congress that Kuwait has requested a low-altitude surveillance system balloon. The balloon would contain a version of the AN/TPS-63 radar as part of Kuwait's early warning system to monitor ground traffic and low-flying aircraft along its borders.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Kuwait wants to buy the Aerostat radar system as well as associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $131 million.

An agency statement identified the Aerostat as a relatively low technology fixed site system that Kuwait could easily absorb and utilize. The system would replace its current Aerostat radar system with the Aerostat balloon/radar system.
