GREECE PLANS TO ORDER RUSSIAN WARSHIPS

MOSCOW [MENL] -- Greece plans to order a range of Russian warships.

Russian industry sources said Athens and Moscow are concluding negotiations for combat and transport vessels for the Hellenic Navy. The sources said the talks are meant to be a follow-up of previous Greek orders for Russian naval vessels.

The Moscow-based Interfax news agency reports that the Hellenic Navy will purchase five attack vessels and several Zubr-class hovercraft. The agency said the ships will be produced by the St. Petersburg-based Almaz Shipbuilding.

A final contract has been drafted but is not expected to be signed for at least the next several weeks, the sources said. They said Greece's Defense Ministry is examining the financial conditions of the proposed contract.
