ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Gulf Arab states have agreed to impose standards for
defense against an unconventional weapons attack.The Gulf Cooperation Council concluded a two-day meeting with a series
of recommendations that would introduce common standards for the protection
of the population of the six member states from a biological, chemical and
nuclear attack. The decision is meant to increase GCC cooperation to improve
the
capabilities of civil defense authorities to respond to a nonconventional
weapons attack.GCC civil defense directors met in Salalah, Oman in a two-day session
that took place last month. The meeting, headed by Omani Civil Defense
director
Brig. Gen. Saif Bin Mohammed Al Tae'i, reviewed papers submitted and
discussed an agenda for cooperation.The official Omani news agency reported that officials discussed
standardizing safety measures as well as programs to respond to weapons of
mass destruction attacks. The Gulf Arab officials were also said to have
focused on protecting oil facilities in their region.
