GCC AGREES ON JOINT DEFENSE AGAINST WMD

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Gulf Arab states have agreed to impose standards for defense against an unconventional weapons attack.

The Gulf Cooperation Council concluded a two-day meeting with a series of recommendations that would introduce common standards for the protection of the population of the six member states from a biological, chemical and nuclear attack. The decision is meant to increase GCC cooperation to improve the capabilities of civil defense authorities to respond to a nonconventional weapons attack.

GCC civil defense directors met in Salalah, Oman in a two-day session that took place last month. The meeting, headed by Omani Civil Defense director Brig. Gen. Saif Bin Mohammed Al Tae'i, reviewed papers submitted and discussed an agenda for cooperation.

The official Omani news agency reported that officials discussed standardizing safety measures as well as programs to respond to weapons of mass destruction attacks. The Gulf Arab officials were also said to have focused on protecting oil facilities in their region.
