CAIRO [MENL] -- Egypt has reiterated its determination to bolster its air
defense command. Egyptian officials said the military plans to procure advanced air
defense assets over the next few years. They said this this could include
the U.S. advanced Patriot, or PAC-3, system. Egyptian Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi reviewed plans for
the air defense command. Addressing military commanders on Air Defense
Supremacy Day, Tantawi said President Hosni Mubarak is committed to
purchasing advanced systems for the command. Tantawi said the assets Egypt would purchase would include advanced air
defense systems, surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery, radars
and early-warning systems. Tantawi said the air defense command is a vital
element in the nation's defense.
