MOSCOW [MENL] -- Libya intends to procure Soviet-origin military air
transports from Ukraine.
Russian industry sources said Libya has signed a deal for the purchase of
Antonov cargo planes. They said the aircraft would be used for the transport
of tanks and heavy weapons.
The purchase was announced by Kiev, which said Ukraine would soon supply
Libya with An-124-100 aircraft. The aircraft was identified as the largest
air cargo plane in the world.
The Kiev announcement by Antonov did not provide details. But the Russian
sources said the An-124 purchase stemmed from an agreement signed more than
a year ago. The accord then called for the purchase of one Antonov with an
option for additional procurement.
