EGYPT EXPECTS 100 M1A1 TANKS BY APRIL

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Egypt has ordered an additional 100 M1A1 tanks from the United States and hopes to increase its Abrams tank fleet to 755.

Egypt has laid the groundwork for the assembly of 100 Abrams tanks from General Dynamics Land Systems. The company was awarded a $141 million contract by the U.S. Army for 100 M1A1 hardware kits for the Egyptian tank coproduction program.

Egypt already has 555 M1A1 tanks, the assembly of which was completed in 1998. The following year, Egypt launched an effort for an additional 100 tanks.

General Dynamics has delivered the M1A1 kits to the Egyptian Tank Factory outside Cairo. Egypt will help assemble 100 additional Abrams tanks by April 2003.
