IN ROGUE OPERATION, MOROCCO EXPORTS PARTS TO LIBYA
CAIRO [MENL] -- A Moroccan aircraft company has been accused of exporting
aircraft systems and spare parts to its North African neighbors and Syria. An appeals court in Casablanca heard the case of a Moroccan
aircraft company that has served as a major supplier to the kingdom's air
force.
At least three members of the Casablanca-based firm, including the owner and
director-general, were charged with forging documents and licenses that
enabled the export of a range of aviation systems and spare parts to Arab
and African countries.Arab diplomatic sources who are following the case said the clients were
alleged to have included Libya and Tunisia. Libya has long been under a
military embargo by the West and the United Nations. The UN sanctions were
suspended in 1999 and Libya has been discussing weapons sales with such
countries as China, Russia and South Africa. The complainant in the case against the aircraft firm was the Royal
Moroccan Air Force. The
air force charged that the firm exported spare parts for military aircraft
in the name of the kingdom's air force.
