SUDAN OBTAINS HELICOPTERS FROM LITHUANIA

LONDON [MENL] -- Sudan has obtained military helicopters from Lithuania.

Western diplomatic sources said Lithuania sold at least two Mi-8 military transport helicopters to Sudan in a six-month period. They said the first Mi-8T was delivered to Khartoum around July 2001 and the second was delivered in January 2002.

The Soviet-origin helicopters were sold by Lithuania's Avia Baltika without an export license. The Mi-8T helicopter has been banned for export to Sudan by the United Nations.

The sources said that in January Avia Baltika also sold Khartoum spare parts for the Mi-8T. They said personnel from the company are helping the Sudanese Air Force absorb the new aircraft.
