JORDAN DEVELOPS MILITARY TECHNOLOGY CENTER

AMMAN [MENL] -- Jordan has launched efforts to develop a military technology training center.

The kingdom is building the Prince Faisal Information Technology Center in the northern city of Irbid. The center will provide training to Arab militaries in information technology required to develop, maintain and upgrade weapons and defense systems.

Jordanian officials have met with representatives from seven Arab militaries to discuss the center. Amman was said to have sought commitments from the militaries for training contracts over the next two years. The center is being established by the state-owned King Abdullah Design and Development Bureau, Yarmouk University and the Indian company Perfect.

Officials have refused to disclose the cost of the center and exactly what would be taught. They said the center hopes to train at least 50 Arab personnel in the development and maintenance of software required for military systems. Jordan is regarded as a leading developer of software in the Arab world.
