PA REPORTS PROGRESS IN U.S. BOMBING PROBE

GAZA CITY [MENL] -- The Palestinian Authority has reported progress in the investigation of the October bombing of a U.S. embassy convoy in the Gaza Strip in which three security guards were killed.

PA sources said Palestinian security agencies have captured two Palestinians determined to have obtained the explosives for the roadside bomb that was detonated near the U.S. embassy convoy outside the Jabalya refugee camp north of Gaza City. The sources said the suspects confessed to participating in the Oct. 15 bombing and later provided information on those who carried out the attack.

The PA has also identified two Palestinians as those who carried out the bombing. The Palestinians, who have not been caught, were said to be members of the so-called Palestinian Resistance Committees, a shadowy group aligned with Fatah.

The State Department identified the U.S. casualties as three security personnel working for the U.S. military contractor DynCorp. The bodyguards had been securing a three-vehicle U.S. embassy convoy to the Gaza Strip to interview Palestinian candidates for Fulbright Scholarship grants.
