U.S. WATCHES ALGERIAN DEAL WITH RUSSIA

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has been closely watching Algeria's reported arms deal with Russia.

Officials said the State Department has sought to verify details of the reported Russian sale of major weapons platforms to the North African state. They said U.S. diplomats have raised the issue in talks with both Algerian and Russian counterparts.

"It's a matter of great interest for us, although I don't see this as significantly affecting our military or defense relationship," an official said.

On March 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin was said to have concluded $7.5 billion worth of defense contracts with Algeria. Russian media reports as well as executives said the deal included the sale of Russian fighter-jets, air trainers, surface-to-air missile systems and anti-tank weapons to Algeria.
