WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. military, saddled with two major military
operations, has been depending on ammunition from Israel. The General Accountability Office said Israel has been supplying the
U.S. military with ammunition amid rising demand. GAO said the U.S. demand
for ammunition has doubled since 2002 and has outpaced production
capabilities of the three government-owned factories, particularly that at
the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, the main producer of small caliber
ammunition and located in Missouri."Unforeseen events such as the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001
and subsequent military deployments, make predicting future requirements
difficult," GAO said in a report entitled "Defense Ammunition" released in
July 2005. "However it is imperative that the warfighter be provided with
sufficient ammunition to carry out missions to counter ongoing and emerging
threats without amassing wasteful unused stockpiles."The state-owned Israel Military Industries has been supplying several
types of light weapons ammunition to the U.S. Army. IMI has been teamed with
a U.S. manufacturer, General Dynamics, for the project.
