HOUSE TARGETS $200m IN MILITARY AID TO EGYPT

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- A U.S. congressional panel has set conditions that could withhold $200 million in military aid to Egypt for 2008.

The House Appropriations Committee has set criteria that could block $200 million in U.S. military aid to Egypt. The committee said the legislation was meant to ensure that Egypt honors its commitments on democracy, human rights and security cooperation with Israel.

"The $200 million cut is substantial," Rep. James Moran, a Virginia Democrat and senior member of the committee, said. "Our ally is not upholding the principles that define us."

The Bush administration has requested that Congress approve $1.726 billion in U.S. aid to Egypt for fiscal 2008, which begins in October. Of that amount, $1.3 billion would be for military aid.
