WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Iraq has ordered advanced airborne intelligence and reconnaissance suites from the United States.

The Iraqi Defense Ministry has awarded a $53 million contract to General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. Under the award, announced on June 11, the San Diego-based company would supply integrated Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance suites to prime contractor Raytheon.

Under the contract, the Iraq Air Force would receive an intial lot of five ISR suites for the Beechcraft King Air 350ER aircraft, manufactured by Raytheon. The air force has ordered the Beechcraft under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program.
