UAE BECOMES LEADING MILITARY MARKET

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United Arab Emirates has become a leading military market in the Middle East.

Forecast International said the UAE, in a bid to enhance power projection, has exceeded Saudi Arabia as the leading market in the Middle East. In a report, Forecast said the UAE has imported a level of armaments comparable to those of Egypt and Israel.

"In the last two years, however, the UAE military market has begun transitioning toward procurement of systems that allow existing capability to be leveraged more effectively," the report said. "Specifically, it has shown greater demand for technologies and platforms that serve to enhance power projection and act as force multipliers."

The report said the UAE has procured 388 French-origin Leclerc main battle tanks, 30 U.S.-origin AH-64A attack helicopters, 12 Project Ghannatha amphibious troop transports, 30 Mirage 2000-9 tactical fighters, and 80 F-16E/F tactical fighters.
