PARIS [MENL] -- U.S. defense majors plan to establish a defense industry in
the United Arab Emirates.Boeing and Lockheed Martin have reached separate agreements with the UAE
to invest in an aerospace and defense industry in Abu Dhabi. The two U.S.
companies would help build facilities and provide training and technology to
establish an infrastructure for the maintenance and production of weapons
systems.On Monday, Boeing and the state-owned UAE company Mubadala Development
signed a memorandum of understanding at the Paris Air Show. Executives said
Mubadala has been selected by the Abu Dhabi emirate to lead the UAE defense
industry project."This MoU reflects our mutual interest to identify, evaluate, research
and define potential future projects in Abu Dhabi across a number of
aerospace segments," Mubadala chief operating officer Waleed Al Muhairi
said. "We view this partnership as a significant step forward in our
strategy to develop sustainable aerospace capabilities in Abu Dhabi and to
further add synergies to develop a cluster dedicated to advanced materials
and composites."
