UAE TAKES U.S. FIRMS TO SET UP INDUSTRY

PARIS [MENL] -- U.S. defense majors plan to establish a defense industry in the United Arab Emirates.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin have reached separate agreements with the UAE to invest in an aerospace and defense industry in Abu Dhabi. The two U.S. companies would help build facilities and provide training and technology to establish an infrastructure for the maintenance and production of weapons systems.

On Monday, Boeing and the state-owned UAE company Mubadala Development signed a memorandum of understanding at the Paris Air Show. Executives said Mubadala has been selected by the Abu Dhabi emirate to lead the UAE defense industry project.

"This MoU reflects our mutual interest to identify, evaluate, research and define potential future projects in Abu Dhabi across a number of aerospace segments," Mubadala chief operating officer Waleed Al Muhairi said. "We view this partnership as a significant step forward in our strategy to develop sustainable aerospace capabilities in Abu Dhabi and to further add synergies to develop a cluster dedicated to advanced materials and composites."
