U.S. Deploys Fire-Detection System In Iraq
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. Army has been deploying fire-detection systems
in Iraq.
The army has ordered the Boomerang system, manufactured by BBN
Technologies, for deployment by ground forces in Iraq. BBN, based in
Cambridge, Mass., has been awarded a $73.8 million contract by the U.S. Army
Project to deliver 8,131 Boomerang Systems, spare parts and training
services through 2008 and early 2009.
"Our soldiers are required to make split second decisions, based on
established rules of engagement, when confronted with hostile sniper
fire,"said Lt. Col. Terrence Howard, U.S. Army Project manager Robotics and
Unmanned Sensors. "They deserve a capability that will tell them two things:
was a shot fired and was it fired at me."
