WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. military has been conducting a phased plan to
establish a logistics infrastructure for Iraqi security forces.
Officials said the U.S.-led coalition has been accelerating plans to
introduce logistics capabilities throughout the Iraq Army and police. They
said the army has demonstrated greater success than the police in absorbing
logistics skills.
"This [logistics] is the long pole in the tent," U.S. Army Brig. Gen.
Steven Salazar said.
In an Aug. 1 briefing, Salazar, who heads the unit that advises Baghdad,
said the coalition has succeeded in establishing a rudimentary logistics
structure for Iraqi security forces. The brigadier said Iraq would contain
four levels of logistics and maintenance support.
