Israel, U.S. Launch Arrow-3 Project
TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Israel and the United States have agreed to cooperate in
the development of an advanced ballistic missile defense system.
The two countries said they would jointly develop the Arrow-3 missile
defense system. Arrow-3 was described as a new-generation system meant to
destroy a missile that contained multiple warheads as well as decoys.
"The Arrow-3 will be jointly developed and produced in an arrangement
similar to the Arrow-2," an official said.
The initiative was disclosed on Aug. 6 during a visit by U.S. Missile
Defense Agency director Henry Obering. Obering, an air force lieutenant
general, has been visiting Israel to advance missile defense cooperation.
Officials said Obering, on a three-day visit, has agreed to help supply
Israel with advanced missile defense assets. They said one of the assets
would be the Aegis-class sea-based missile defense system, which contains
the SM-3 interceptor.
